What Did Georgia O'Keeffe Read?

On a recent trip to Santa Fe, I enjoyed a visit to the O'Keeffe museum and a tour of her home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Many of her possessions have been preserved and are available for public viewing, including a bookcase which houses books on gardening, cooking, nutrition and exercise. The bookcase, a sensible construction of vegetable and fruit crates, includes some interesting titles!

Inspiration from Giverny

On our recent trip to Giverny, it was easy to see how Claude Monet drew inspiration from his amazing gardens and the surroundings of this quaint village. Now a home to the Giverny Museum of Impressionism, gift shops, and restaurants, Giverny is abloom with enchanting fragrances and colors!

Good Sam Show and The Tuck Box

The Good Sam Showcase of Miniatures in San Jose, California, was so much fun! Mr. T2S and I enjoyed meeting many new people, including Patty from Petit Orphelin. She shared a couple of her sweet, hand sculpted babies with us.

On Sunday morning, I demonstrated applying decals to dishes. In the afternoon, I had time to view a few of the pieces on display from area miniaturists. One of those pieces, The Tuck Box, was built by Don Silva. Don took measurements and photos of the life-size Tuck Box in Carmel, California and built an exact replica of the 1927 English style tea room. It was so charming, that Mr. T2S and I decided to make a visit to Carmel the following day. Unfortunately, The Tuck Box closed just before we arrived, but we did enjoy checking out the neighboring gift shop and wine bar!

A New Book for Making Polymer Clay Foods

I am excited about a new book from Oiseau deNim, called, Miniatures en pate polymére (de retour du marché) / Polymer Clay Miniatures (return from the market). It's a great technique book and it's chock full of photos! I think that the release of this book has not been given enough attention here in the U.S.

The instructions to make a large range of market foods are provided in clear, step-by-step photos and text. Yes, it is French text. However, each step is clearly photographed in a way that makes me feel comfortable to try any of the lovely "recipes" even though I don't speak French! The author, Peiwen Petitgrand of Oiseau deNim, is a skilled miniature food artisan and a wonderful teacher. She has given several classes on CDHM and teaches workshops.

Peiwen provides polymer clay techniques for beginners (like me) as well as methods that would appeal to more advanced food artists. The chapters include: an introduction to FIMO, materials and tools, general techniques, advanced techniques (caning and shading of colors), instructions for making 23 different foods (listed below), and some surprise tips for putting the finishing touches on your miniature food scenes.

She teaches how to make:

• artichokes (oh-so lovely!)

Favorite Posts of 2011 - Link Party

A Spooky Treat

I really LOVE receiving photos from customers showing what they've created with the True2Scale kits. I add them to the Customer Gallery.

Yesterday, I received an email from Mary Broaddus that made my jaw drop! She truly took the Halloween Glitter House Kit to the next level! The photos speak for themselves.

Mary created everything on the table from scratch; with the exception of the cat container, which she altered.

Tuscan Inspiration

I haven't had a chance to work on any minis lately, but I have been thinking a lot about the Tuscan farmhouse I'd like to create some day. While in Italy last fall, we stayed in a lovely farmhouse near Greve in Chianti, which has inspired me to plan for a future miniature project. I love the stone facades, clay tile roofs and wooden shutters of the farmhouses in the region. The colors and textures are in perfect harmony with their surroundings.

Here are some of the photos that I snapped for future reference. Notice how the cat was patient with this obsessed tourist!

This Bunny Doesn't Eat Hostas

The last three weekends I have been organizing a garage sale at my mom's house. While cleaning out a desk for the sale, I found a CD of pictures I took way back in 2003 at the flower show at Chicago's Navy Pier. Here are a few of the inspirational pics I snapped.
